Safe Hockey & Club Integrity Policies

CHILD SAFETY, INTEGRITY AND SAFE HOCKEY COMMITTMENT

Sport holds an important place in Australian life. It brings people together, strengthens communities and supports the wellbeing of individuals from all backgrounds. At Kedron-Wavell Hockey Club, we recognise the value of providing an environment where people feel respected and included, regardless of differences in language, ability, culture or beliefs.

Our Club is committed to fostering a safe, welcoming and fair environment for all who participate in hockey. To support this commitment, we have established a range of policies and adopted the integrity and conduct standards set by our governing bodies. These frameworks guide our behaviours and help ensure that every member, players, coaches, volunteers, officials and supporters, can enjoy positive and meaningful experiences within our Club.

A key focus for Kedron-Wavell Hockey Club is child safety. We are dedicated to ensuring that all children and young people participating in our programs are protected, supported and able to take part in hockey in an environment that prioritises their wellbeing. Child-safe practices are embedded throughout our policies, expectations and behaviour standards, and all adults involved in our Club share responsibility for creating a safe space for young athletes to learn, grow and enjoy the game.

We acknowledge that the integrity of community sport can be affected by behaviours such as discrimination, harassment, abuse or actions that diminish others’ enjoyment of the game. These behaviours can cause harm to individuals and erode the sense of belonging that grassroots sport is built upon.

Maintaining integrity helps create a culture where fairness, respect, inclusiveness and good sportsmanship are upheld. It ensures that everyone involved in hockey can participate with confidence, knowing they are part of a supportive and community-minded environment.

Kedron-Wavell Hockey Club aligns its values and commitment with Hockey Australia, Hockey Queensland and both Brisbane Hockey Associations (BHA and BWHA). Together, we work to promote a safe, inclusive and respectful sporting environment, particularly for children and young people, and uphold the standards that protect the wellbeing of all members of our hockey community.

To support this commitment, the Club has established clear governance arrangements and safeguards that guide how child safety and integrity are embedded in practice.

CHILD SAFE ORGANISATION ALIGNMENT

Kedron Wavell Hockey Club Inc acknowledges its responsibilities as a club that provides sporting activities to children and young people in Queensland. The Club is committed to the principles of child-safe organisations, including leadership commitment, risk management, recruitment and screening, education, and clear reporting pathways.

The Club’s Child Safety Screening & Role Separation Procedure, Paid Coach Screening Checklist, and induction processes support compliance with Queensland’s Working with Children framework and align with Hockey Queensland and Hockey Australia safeguarding expectations.

The Club recognises that child safety is an ongoing responsibility and commits to regularly reviewing its practices to reflect legislative changes, Hockey Queensland guidance, and continuous improvement in child-safe sport governance.

COACH & OFFICIAL SCREENING

Kedron Wavell Hockey Club Inc is committed to providing a safe, inclusive and respectful environment for all children and young people who participate in hockey. As an affiliated club of Hockey Queensland, we align with the Hockey Australia National Integrity Framework and Queensland child-safety requirements.
All coaches and officials working with children at our Club are subject to screening processes appropriate to their role. This includes mandatory Working with Children Checks (Blue Cards or exemption cards) as required by Queensland law. For paid coaching and officiating roles, the Club applies additional screening measures such as referee checks, experience review, and child-safety induction discussions.
Screening is supported by ongoing monitoring, clear codes of conduct, and accessible reporting pathways. These measures help ensure that everyone involved with Kedron Wavell Hockey Club understands their responsibilities and contributes to a safe hockey environment for children and young people. Detailed screening procedures are overseen by the Club’s Child Safety Officer and documented in club procedures.

NATIONAL INTEGRITY FRAMEWORK

The National Integrity Framework is a collection of policies that outlines the standards of acceptable and unacceptable behaviour in hockey and details the processes for managing complaints when these standards are not met. Kedron-Wavell Hockey Club, along with the Brisbane Hockey Associations (BHA and BWHA) and Hockey Queensland, has temporarily adopted the Hockey Australia policies listed below.

The club will continue to create specific policies that align with the requirements of our state governing bodies.

BLUE CARD REQUIREMENTS (QUEENSLAND)

In Queensland, a Blue Card is compulsory for anyone in sport, senior or junior, who may have contact with children or young people. This includes situations where a junior player is part of a senior team, meaning all coaches, managers, officials, referees and volunteers aged 18+ must hold a valid Blue Card before participating in any role involving those juniors. The Queensland Government requires a Blue Card for anyone working or volunteering in sport or active recreation where children are involved, and sporting organisations reinforce that anyone with contact with players under 18 must be Blue Card compliant. Enquiries regarding the blue card policy should be directed to our Child Safety Officer, Lisa Newbold at childsafetyofficer@kwhockey.com
